Organ and Tissue Donation
Advances in medical science have made organ transplant much more common, and for some of us, death provides the opportunity to give the gift of life or sight to another person. While circumstances surrounding a death may limit this option, age and health criteria are evaluated on an individual basis at the time of death. Everyone should consider themselves a donor -- even the corneas of very elderly donors can be useful to patients in need.
If you want to serve as an organ donor, the most important step is to make sure that your health care agent and your physician know your wishes, and that they are reflected in your medical record. Check out FCA of MN's information about health care directives and naming a health care agent. There is no cost to donate, and your family will not pay any medical expenses associated with the donation.
